Tristan Stephenson: Rosemaund’s Not-So-Usual Master Blender

Five hundred and fifty distilleries. Ninety countries. Ten books. More than half a million copies sold.

And quite a few ultramarathons.

Tristan Stephenson is not the old stereotype of a whisky blender, which is one of the reasons he is exactly right for Rosemaund.

His 25-year career has taken him through bars, restaurants, coffee, cocktails, writing, consultancy and distilleries around the world. He has co-founded award-winning venues, written extensively about whisky and other spirits, and developed an unusually broad view of how drinks are made, served, discussed and ultimately enjoyed.

From a cold call at Purl to Rosemaund

I first met Tristan years ago when I walked into Purl, the cocktail bar he had co-founded in Marylebone, on a cold sales call.

He later judged Rock the Farm, and after that we kept crossing paths in bars, restaurants and distilleries around the world.

Those encounters eventually became a friendship. Today, I am very happy to call him Rosemaund Farm Distillery’s Master Blender.

What does a Master Blender do?

Distillation creates spirit. Maturation transforms it. Blending gives it direction.

At Rosemaund, Tristan assesses our inventory cask by cask. He identifies the individual characteristics each cask can contribute, then brings selected whiskies together to create a complete expression.

One bourbon cask might bring lifted orchard fruit and vanilla. Another may provide cereal weight and structure. Sherry-matured whisky can add dried fruit, richness and length. Virgin oak can bring spice and grip.

The job is not to make every release taste identical.

It is to ensure each release feels recognisably Rosemaund while revealing a different aspect of our mature spirit.

Experience beyond the warehouse

Tristan understands how spirit is made, but he also understands what happens after it leaves the distillery.

He knows how whisky is poured in some of the world’s best bars. He has watched what curious drinkers respond to and what leaves them cold. He understands that reverence can sometimes make whisky less inviting, not more.

That perspective matters.

A distillery can become too inward-looking, judging everything only from inside its own walls. Tristan brings the outside world back into the conversation without asking Rosemaund to chase fashion.

He helps us listen while retaining a clear sense of who we are.

Appreciation, not excess

Tristan is also much closer to the person for whom we are making Rosemaund than the old caricature of a whisky drinker.

He runs ultramarathons, takes his fitness seriously and still believes that a genuinely good whisky is one of life’s proper pleasures.

Those ideas are not contradictory.

Rosemaund is about appreciation rather than excess: knowing what has gone into a bottle, taking time over it and enjoying it in good company.

Tristan and The Director’s Cut

You can taste Tristan’s approach in The Director’s Cut, our third 10-year-old English single malt.

It is bourbon-led, with Oloroso sherry and virgin-oak influence. The whisky begins with baked red apple, orange zest and wild berries before moving into toasted oak, malt, baking spice and a long white-pepper finish.

It is richer than our spring release but remains balanced and distinctly Rosemaund.

Our job in Herefordshire is to farm well, distil well and look after the spirit.

Tristan’s is to challenge it, select it and help decide how it should eventually reach the glass.

With 550 distilleries behind him, he brings plenty of reference points. More importantly, he knows when to put those references aside and listen to the whisky in front of him.
